Abstract

The present work aims to address the problem of the future tense from the notion of multiple modernities developed by the sociologist Shmuel Noah Eisenstadt. Through the notion of multiple modernities, it will be argued that the very notion of the future conceptualized in modernity has been nuanced in different ways in the various societies in which this model has been adopted. In order to fulfill the objectives of this text, it is proposed to follow an exposition line in three steps: to show how the notion of the future appears in modernity and the qualitative change that this implies compared to previous ideas of it; explore the notion of multiple modernities as it has been worked on by Eisenstadt and taken up by various thinkers; argue how it is that as a result of this argument it is possible to think of multiple temporalities and, consequently, of diverse futures that are in dispute.
